Urticaria (Hives) Treatment

Ayurvedic care for itchy rashes and welts (Sheetapitta) - finding and treating the triggers

Itchy Welts (Sheetapitta)

What Is Urticaria?

Urticaria, or hives, causes raised, itchy red or skin-coloured welts that can appear suddenly on any part of the body. They often move around and fade within hours, but new ones may keep appearing. When hives keep coming back for more than six weeks, it is called chronic urticaria.

In Ayurveda, urticaria is described as Sheetapitta, linked to an imbalance of Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Treatment focuses on identifying your triggers and reducing how often the hives return.

03

Infections

04

Heat, Cold & Pressure

Insect Bites

Bites and stings can cause hives around the area or all over the body.

Our Ayurvedic Approach

Treatment depends on whether your urticaria is new or long-standing and what triggers it. It may include:

  • Finding triggers: a detailed history of food, medicines, environment and timing of the hives
  • Internal medicines: Ayurvedic herbs to reduce itching and support the body's balance
  • Panchakarma: cleansing therapies such as Virechana for chronic, recurring urticaria, when suitable
  • Diet: avoiding foods that trigger your hives and following a light diet
  • Lifestyle: managing stress, sleep and exposure to heat or cold as needed

Emergency warning: if hives come with swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, difficulty breathing or dizziness, go to the nearest hospital immediately.

Medicines and therapies are prescribed only after a consultation. Please do not start any herb or medicine on your own.
